Where the Gospel Landed...
Good evening,
Ever since our Cultural Narrative unit in 2017, I have been meaning to head on over to Koukourarata / Port Levy to find the place where the Gospel was first preached in the South Island of New Zealand (see page 4 below...)
Well...I found it!
Just on the bend as you come into Koukourarata. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the plaque that identified the first Maori Anglican Church, I think it's in someone's back yard.
So I headed down to the wharf, looked back up the hill, and saw this.
(From the other side, looking back)
Well, I couldn't let that go unexplored, so I drove up, and found this.
Cool! Along with a rather nice plaque on the back of the stone seat at the base of the Tipuna Pou.
In front of that, these big photos explaining just what is where. From across the harbor...
...and from where I was standing.
So matching up what I could see with the photo...
...ohh, that's why Taawao preached where he did - the cross plinth is opposite where the old pa was.
And just opposite, and down a bit...
...was the pa where Tautahi's father was born.
But perhaps the most surprising thing of all...
...I found an actual, working telephone booth!
Next stop - Te Ahu Patiki / Mount Herbert, my maunga, and then Panua / Sandy Bay. Hopefully in the holidays.
